Euro 2012 Day 5

The Czechs made a flying start to the match against Greece with two goals inside the first six minutes. Jiracek netted the first goal off a pass through the Greek defence by Huschman. The second goal arrived three minutes later as a drive by Theodor Gebre Selassie left the Chalkias off his footing and Pilar sent the ball into the Greek goal. The Czechs continues to dominate the play on counterattacks against Greece. Greece had a chance on goal late in the first half, but Fotakis was ruled offside and the goal was discounted. The first half ended with the Czechs at a comfortable two goals up.

The Greeks rebounded during the second half and pressed the Czech defense much better than they did in the first half. While they were unable to get a draw in the match, Greece denied the Czech Republic a clean sheet with a goal in the 53 minute. Samaras sent a weak cross from the left which Petr Cech came out to meet, but a blunder by Cech sent the ball to Fanis Gekas and he sent the ball into the net. The Greek team played very well in the second half and got a few more shots at Cech, but were unable to equalize after 90 minutes. The match ended with the Czechs gaining 3 points in the group and recovering from their bad loss to Russia.

The Russians showed their contuing dominance of the group during the match against Poland. The combination of Arshavin and Dzagoev kept up the fierce Russian attack while Poland relied on their backup goalkeeper Tyton after Szczesny was sent off in the match against Greece. The Arshavin-Dzagoev duo shined again today as Dzagoev scored from a header off a free kick by Arshavin. While Russia kept their advantage of possession, Poland snuck through on the counterattack during the second half and had a few shots on goal. The Poles equalized in the 57th minute as a long run down the right side led to Blaszczykowski rocketing the ball past Malafeev into the top corner of the net. The game ended at a draw, saving Poland’s chances for advancing. With the games today, all teams in group A still have the possibility to go through to the quarterfinals.
